I, too, would begin by weeding and getting the books shelved in proper =
order.  Shonda mentioned Renaissance and this might be a good =
decorating/display theme for the year.  The possibilities are endless; =
castles, paintings, architecture.  This theme would also allow you to =
hit most of the areas of the Dewey Decimal system.  Great teaching =
opportunity.=20

If you are manually checking out books, just make sure you can identify =
each individual book.  If you need to, pencil in a temporary number.  =
Put it on the book and the checkout card. You could use the year 2003 =
plus 1, then 2, then 3 etc.  Keep a running list of which numbers you =
have used.  It won't be necessary to write any titles or authors because =
this is just a temporary, emergency check out procedure for books =
without accession numbers.

Good luck.  Remember to enjoy getting to know your students and find =
those who love to read to help you with your Renaissance.
