I have always paid for my own ALA (and state) memberships until my present position. The school offered to pay for both my national and state memberships, however, I had already paid for both. Because I generally deduct them from my income taxes (as professional dues / expenses related to my job), I don't have a problem with paying for them myself. I agree with Carol Simpson that this is a part of the profession. In addition, because the dues come out of my own pocket, I take the membership and the roundtables that I join more seriously than I probably would if it came from the school's budget (which, by the way is not a part of my library's budget). (Yes, I'm spoiled at my present school because I have a great budget and am offered many perks...but it's the first time I've ever had anything like this at the "K-12 level." The only thing that was close to this was at the university level...and they didn't pay my membership dues--- it was a requirement of my tenure track to be active in state, local and national library organizations AND contribute to the profession.) ~Shonda Brisco Trinity Valley MS / US Librarian Fort Worth, TX sbrisco021@charter.net =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
