Hi folks,
I am long time member of ALA/AASL and feel my money for dues is well
spent. The professional publications and the "big issue" work done on
behalf of all school library folks make the dues reasonable. I know
people who complain about the "high" dues, but spend far more at
Starbucks for a couple of grandes each week. It's perspective.
An alternative (or addition) to ALA/AASL for those who wish to be a part
of a national organization that works on behalf of school media
specialists, the newly formed SIGMS (special interest group for media
specialists) of ISTE. Dues are less and the focus tends to be less on
"libraries" and more on education and technology efforts. This is a new
group, but will pick up steam. You find out more by visiting the ISTE

For what it's worth, I have found that some schools are more willing to
fund national conferences IF the attendee is also presenting or serving
as a volunteer in the organization. It gives the school some bragging
rights.
