I am jumping in here- I am not a member of ALA, nor NYLA. And, when I was in
a public library they did not pick up memberships nor sent us to conferences
(they sent a board member to NYLA a couple of times!)- I was able to afford
ALA then I was a student and recived a student rate and also attended a
conference as an award (paid by ALA and my library school).
Now that I am in a public school, I have not decided to re-sign up and get
involved in the proper division since I have been getting so much great info
here, for free. Sure, we have a fund for professional development in my
district and I could apply for funds to go to either NYLA's or ALA's annual
conferences. I'd rather go to local events and buy more books and buy
supplies for the kids with my budget money!
