This URL is for North Carolina's State Employee Safety & Health Handbook.

Under "Electrical Safety" it states:
    * Extension cords are considered temporary wiring by the National
Electrical Code, which limits their use to a maximum of 90 days.

If you're interested in pursuing this, I guess your next step would be to
see if your school is exempt from the National Electrical Code.
