Dear Janet
I am so glad your principal observed and freaked out - it was the best
possible result, because now you ask HIM/ HER what his solution would be.
How does he suggest that checkout should happen at the same time as keeping
the place orderly, helping students with their selections and encouraging
them to take on new challenges? How does he expect you to be in three
places at once?

Put him on the spot! Then, when he has flustered and floundered for a
while, show him the list of suggestions that you get from LM_NET, with
HAVING AN ASSISTANT quite clearly at the top of the list.

This is evidence-based advocacy. You can say "If I had an assistant to do
the data entry, it would free me up to do this, this and this with the
students." Students could put their returns in as they come in and the
assistant can process these while you are doing your lesson (cuts down
hassles with overdues etc) and then borrowers can do what they need to do
towards the end of the lesson and those who are borrowing can continue with
whatever written follow-up you had.

Show how having an assistant frees you up to do what you ought to be doing
and how this impacts on improving student learning outcomes!

You might not get an assistant next week but the seeds will have been
planted,

Barbara
