Dear friends,
I send a note home each September, and ask that a parent signs the bottom
and returns it to me before a child can borrow any books for the year. The
way I figure it, if a child's home is so disorganized or disinterested that
he can't bring this back to me I don't want to chance a book going home. I
do let kids without permission slips borrow books to take to their
classroom.

I started doing this after I had a few disgruntled parents who didn't seem
to understand the concept of a library. Each child receives a letter each
September. The classroom teacher returns them to me. Each class's slips are
alphabetized, stapled together, marked in my roll book, and marked on our
Winnebago check out class sheets.

In the past I have made this into a tri-folded pamphlet. It's a pain to set
up since the paper is printed longways (landscape) but the tear off part is
regular ways, and there is printing on both sides. This year I'm cutting it
down to one sided, with all the print going one way. It will be run off an
bright paper.

By the way, I work in a school of 600 first, second and third graders.
School starts Tuesday, and the kids come Wednesday. This is my 11th year in
this building.

Please share your comments. And feel free to copy, edit, and use it if you
like.

Have a great day!

Karen

Dear Parents,

Welcome to a brand new school year. The Dorothy L. Bullock Elementary School
Library is open to all students. Each class visits the library every week
for an opportunity to borrow books.
All students are required to have a permission slip on file, signed by the
parent or guardian, before they are allowed to check out books to bring
home.
This permission slip states that you and your child will be responsible for
lost, seriously damaged beyond repair, or overdue books. Library check-out
privileges will be suspended until outstanding books are returned or paid
for.
The library is an exciting place to be. Please feel free to come and visit
during the school year!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Karen DeFrank, Library-Media Specialist
A Few Reminders
Our Library Rules are short and easy to remember!
     1. Keep books safe and dry.
     2. Keep library books in your hands, your school desk or in your
backpack.

Damaged books
If a library book has an accident while in your care please return it
a.s.a.p. Do not attempt to repair it yourself. We have become experts at
book repair and have a wide assortment of repair materials to use. If the
repairs are impossible we will let you know by sending the book back to you
with a note.

Volunteers
We need parent volunteers. If you could donate even one hour a week please
call.

Donations
Do you have books your child has outgrown? We will gladly take them off your
hands. Some will be added to our collection, while others may go to
classrooms or set aside to be swapped during our annual Book Swap in June.
We also accept plants that have overgrown their homes, and lonely fish,
hermit crabs, or other small pets.

Fines
We do not charge money for late books. However, replacement costs are
charged for books that are lost or damaged beyond repair. Overdue notices
are sent home as needed.

Please fill this out and return it to your child's teacher tomorrow:

I understand that my child and I are responsible for any library books
borrowed from the Dorothy L. Bullock Elementary School Media Center. Books
may be borrowed for one week at a time. Lost or seriously damaged library
books must be paid for. Please keep in mind that a new library book costs
around $15. 00.
