When I was in an elementary, I allowed students to checkout their own books IF the aide or I (or some very cooperative teachers) were standing by. The bar scanner was mounted beside the screen and each student had a library card with their patron bar code. We taught them to hold the card on top of the book just above the book's bar code. They then scanned each one. The error message, if they had an overdue, was the dreaded "red box." They were never to checkout unattended but they did sometimes. I always knew the culprit though, if there was an error message, but not if check out was successful.
