I have an all-boys' school, 625 students. I have students from study halls
every period but 4 - my lunch and 5 - my planning period. I have a limit of
16 boys - this allows me to monitor what they are doing on the computers (
they must clear with me what they are going to do and sign in) as well as
maintain discipline and still help those other students who come in. If a
teacher wants to bring in a whole class, I ask for, and get at least two
days notice so I can send notices to the affected study halls. Students
coming form study halls must sign up with the teacher and I get that list
when they come in. I need it for Fire Drills, etc.
Since I have no aides - just two mother volunteers - if I am not here the
library is closed. However, I have two teachers who are here after school to
monitor students- and they also do some tutoring- this means the library can
stay open till 5 four days a week and till 4 on Fridays. I leave at 4 every
day. And even if I am not here, the students can come in after school to do
some research or use the computers.

We seem to have hit a happy medium with discipline here. We have only
one forty minute advisement period (study hall) where the library and
the computer lab are both open and under our supervision. I am very
lucky in that I do not have students coming in all day from study halls.
The rest of the day is used by individuals, small groups, and research
classes. The student body of about 325 is divided up into 15 advisement
groups for the first 40 minutes of the day. We allow 5 students to come
from every advisement group. Some send all 5 - some send only 2 or 3.
We average probably around 40 students. It is not a silent atmosphere -
but it is quiet and purposeful. If students are disruptive, we have a
clear set of consequences, that are gradually more severe for 2nd or 3rd
offences. since we have been in our new library ( a year and a half) -
we have never had an office referral and I think only 1 student has been
out for 20 days (the highest penalty). The students LOVE the library
and the usual 10 day out period is painful to them.
We used to allow only 3 per advisement - but have upped it to 5 with no
problems. We also let the teachers know that if they have more than 5
that appear to have a genuine need to be here working - then they just
simply have to pick up the phone and ask. We can usually accomodate
them.
The rest of our day is taken up with research classes. I am always
happy that we don't have more study hall periods and hope it always
remains that way.
But - what if you have study halls all day long - how do you control
the numbers? Before block scheduling, we used to have more traditional
study halls. I used to gather the enrollment numbers from all the study
hall teachers and then give each teacher a total number they were
allowed to send. At the time, I only allowed a maximum of 30 in the
library per period. Each study hall would get a percentage of that
total number, based on the study hall enrollment. So the teacher with
an enrollment of 28 students would be able to send a larger number of
students than the teacher who only had 17 in thier study hall. As
always - if they had more students who seemed to really need the library
- they could just give us a call.
