GEN: looking for book title

Hello Everyone,
I'm looking for a book for a student and she cannot remember the title
or author.  She says the book is about a high school boy who seems to
have everything until a car accident results in the amputation of his
leg.  After that he kind of goes down hill, gets in with the wrong crowd
(one of his closest friends in the book is Raphael), gets into drugs,
etc.  She believes the main character's name is Gabriel, and she says
the book as she remembers had a purple cover.  Eventually the main
character turns his life around.  Any ideas of the title or author?
