Greeting,

Many of you asked me to post a hit for my request for Christmas Around the World.
I received quite a few websites to use and some ideas. Thanks to all who
contributed.

I have a book suggestion for Christmas in Sweden: "Christmas in Noisy Village" by
Astrid Lindgren (paperback version ISBN 0140503447). It is set around the time of
Astrid's own childhood, probably around the 1910's or 1920's, but even so, the
description is not that far off from Christmas celebrations nowadays - just add
that just about "everyone" watches a special Disney Christmas show at 3 p.m. on
Christmas Eve... (This has been airing every year since the late 50's or early
60's, and it is practically the same show every year [they just add a clip form
this year's big Disney movie] - it used to be a bigger deal to kids before VCR's
and lots of TV channels, but it still draws a huge audience).

Another suggestion for a pre-Christmas, but Christmas season celebration in Sweden
is "Lucia Morning in Sweden" by Ewa Rydaker, ISBN 91-631-1730-4. The Lucia
celebration is very typically Swedish, although Lucia was a Sicilian saint.
Children or young adults dress up as Lucia and her followers, carrying candles, and
bringing coffee, saffron rolls and gingerbread very early in the morning, while
singing special Lucia songs as well as Christmas carols. It is celebrated on
December 13th, which used to be the longest night of the year when the Julian
calendar was still in use. This celebration is held early in the morning on
December 13th in practically every home where there are children, school, daycare
center and workplace in Sweden. Nobel prize winners are surprised with a visit from
Lucia and her followers, which at times can be quite a jolting experience for those
who are unfamiliar with the custom... In the dark Swedish winter time, this
celebration of light is quite welcome.

Greetings from Sweden, where the Christmas season starts next Sunday with the 1st
Sunday of Advent (when people hang special Advent stars or place special advent
candle sticks in their windows), and it lasts until the Christmas tree is
traditionally thrown out with a "Christmas tree stripping party" on January 13th J,

When I taught Elementary I did the following with all the first graders ( seven
classes worth). We did the theme of light: Christmas candles, Candles for Los
Pasadas, Candles for Hanukkah and Candles for Kwanza. We had three centers about
the same holiday for each visit. 1) Website projected up on the Smartboard to make
it interactive run by out Instructional Technology person. 2) Craft or game run by
the teacher. 3) Story, drama or similar activity led by the librarian. We made
tissue paper candles filled with candy for the last day. The music teacher planned
with us so they sang songs related to the activity when they came to her.

Don't Forget Mardi Gras, which is really a celebrationthat begins at Christmas and
Ends on Ash Wednesday. The kids could color masks as part of it. Also St. Lucia's
Day. We did this in grade school. We all made paper wreaths and paper candles.
There is a custom in Guatemala called (I think) losposos (check this). It is when
people reinact Mary andJoseph's search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. The
"Christmas City" is Nurenburg, Germany. There is the "Legend of the pickle" - very
popular incatalogs now but I think it is German in origin. Hidea glass pickle
ornament (or paper cut out ) in thelibrary and have the kids hunt for it.The one
whofinds it gets a special treat. Check the web for traditions around the
world.Don't forget NORAD's website to track santa. Alsosites like "Northpole.com"
have activities for kids.

I love using Tree of Cranes by Allen Say. It is the story of a child in Japan who
goes out in December and gets wet and cold. When he comes inside his mother is
visably, yet quietly, annoyed and sends him to his room after his lunch. She gets a
tree covered with paper cranes ready for when he gets up from his rest. She
explains about the custom in far away California, where she was born, that
decorates trees at this time of year. Then she extracts a promise from him to not
play in the water again. His is given a gift of the dragon kite that he wanted.
Lovely cross-cultural story. My description does not due it justice.

Usually had the students choose a country and then a custom, a food used during the
holiday, who played Santa, when it was celebrated, etc.

"You can find out about Christmas Traditions from France, Asia, Italy, and other
countries and continents all over the world. There's a Christmas Countdown calendar
that tells how many months, days, minutes and seconds there are until Christmas,
and you can learn to say "Merry Christmas" in thirty three languages. You'll find
lyrics to Christmas carols and a place to send email to Santa Claus as well. And in
the true spirit of Christmas, you can learn how to help organizations like Toys for
Tots, the Christmas

Seals Program, and groups that provide food for the hungry. "
