Hello everyone. I am a brand new librarian (just graduated from Drexel a year ago)
and am I'm writing because we are planning to have a Slammin' @ Your Library event
in January (not in October, alas, AASL came first.)

I spoke with our principal about having a slam poetry event, he said go forward,
and I began working with 2 English teachers. We planned to do slam poetry at the
same time as the Shakespeare festival to compare the two. We sought a slam poet to
come and perform for us to show the kids how its done.

About a week ago, the Principal asked to see me. He said he wanted to stop the
slam poetry event because he didn't like the word slam, didn't know what slam
poetry was, and didn't want the kids to "slam the school." How many problems can
you count in these statements? I am horrified at this response (especially after
he had already said to go with it). After explaining what slam poetry is, how we
were integrating into the curriculum, and the Shakespeare festival, he asked me to
find other librarians who have hosted Slam Poetry events.

He has also recently rejected a few other of my programming ideas.

So I'm asking for help, positive experiences from Slammin' @ Your Library, and
suggestions on how I can more effectively deal with the principal.

Thanks, Amy
