We use this as the past tense of "to spell", especially in spoken language.
It's like crept and learnt.
Just another one of those differences between English and American, I guess.

Some teachers in my school are debating the usage of the word "spelt".
It appears in several dictionaries as the British past tense of "spell"
or an alternate of "spelled".
