Hi folks I am doing a large display in my library for CNY - and have lots of ideas etc. But I am curious that in Hong Kong and China it is being referred to it as the Year of the Goat, when here it is being referred to as the Year of the Sheep/ Ram. I read somewhere that Sheep/ Ram/ Goat are interchangeable but can someone confirm that in the countries where CNY is more than a colourful festival, they are using goat not sheep or ram. And can someone tell me why the words are interchangeable? It is my understanding that the years are named for the animals that responded to Buddha's call and in the order they came, and there are a lot of biological differences between sheep and goats. (Being a New Zealander and having heard every sheep joke imaginable, believe me, I know all about sheep!) I have done a lot of research into this topic (and written maths units about it) and I know the children will ask me and I want to have the right answers. Thank you so much Barbara PS If you are interested in a post I wrote to OZTL_NET outlining some ideas for CNY displays, please ask.
