American Girl (series)
The Courage of Sarah Noble (Dalgleish)
Next Spring an Oriole (and other books by Whelan)
Harper/Trophy's I Can Read (series)
    The Golly Sister (Byars)
Clara and the Book wagon (Levinson)
I=3DB9m Sorry Almira Ann (Kurtz)
Scholastic Step up Classics (series)

Recommended for fantasy were:

The Secrets of Droon (series by Abbott)
Aliens for Breakfast (Etra)

Arthur Chapter Books (series)
Commander Toad (series by Yolen)
Bunnicula (Howe)

Marie Fern sent me her web site that has lists in many genres:
http://www.websterschools.org/classrooms/state library/library.html

One person recommended borrowing books from the town library. Another
suggested buying several paper backs of appropriate titles for use when =
the
book reports are assigned.

Again, thanks for your generous and thoughtful responses.
