Cindy asked about author visits:

> First of all, how is an
>author visit structured? Does the author present at a
>school assembly? To small groups?

This is generally a matter of the preferences of the host and the
preferences of the visiting author. Between the two of you, you will
decide what works best with your situation and the author's comfort level.

>What exactly happens? Are there workshops for
>students?

You may invite an author who likes to run writing workshops, or Q&A
sessions, or you may invite an author who gives several larger group
addresses. Finally, you may hire an author who would like to combine the
two, addressing a large assembly and then meeting with small groups.

>What costs are involved?

You can expect to pay the author's daily fee (for a pre-determined number
of sessions), plus travel, meals, and accommodations if he/she is coming
from away.

>I'd like to think about an author visit for the next
>school year. As you can see from my questions i am
>still learning. I am always grateful to the group of
>LM Netters who share their expertise so willingly.

I hope you'll visit my website, as I have lots of information about author
and illustrator visits, including rationale and sample
contracts. www.tonibuzzeo.com. I've also co-authored a book on the topic,
entitled TERRIFIC CONNECTIONS WITH AUTHORS, ILLUSTRATORS, AND STORYTELLERS
(Libraries Unlimited, 1999) which you might find very useful in your efforts!

Best of luck, and let me know if there are any more questions I can answer!
