When I checked my email earlier today I got a strange virus warning message.
The sender was supposedly Norton's and the warning was in red, not the usual
Norton's yellow. The warning told me that my machine was infected with the
Sobig virus and that it could not be repaired.

I was immediately alerted. Any email virus warning that I have received in
the past has given me the option to quarantine the virus if it could not be
repaired. This one didn't. Also how can simply opening an email program
put a virus on the machine? I had run a Norton scan last night and no files
or boot record was infected. I ran a scan again after receiving the warning
and no files or boot record was infected. I checked the startup folder and
there were no virus files in it.

I did not open the message which had no subject. Any email that I have
received from Symantec before was from Symantec, not Norton. I rebooted the
machine and reopened my mail program and the message did not show up. Any
virus messages that I have received previously have been from individual
senders. I have never received such a message from Norton's before.

I am warning everyone that if they get such a message, do not open it. I
don't know if the message itself had a virus or not, but I was not about to
take a chance.

Please let me know if anyone else has experienced this.
