Do I have just the book for you! Walter Dean Myers and Christopher Myers have just written a wonderful book called BLUES JOURNEY that does just what you need. It's published by Holiday House, and it is just out. There's also a terrific book called _i see the rhythm_ by Toyomi Igus (illus by Michele Wood, 1998) that encompasses the whole of African American music in a gorgeous picture book form.
