Do I have just the book for you!
Walter Dean Myers and Christopher Myers have just written a
wonderful book called BLUES JOURNEY that does just what you
need. It's published by Holiday House, and it is just out.

There's also a terrific book called _i see the rhythm_ by Toyomi
Igus (illus by Michele Wood, 1998) that encompasses the whole of
African American music in a gorgeous picture book form.

And Julius Lester's BLUES SINGERS: TEN WHO ROCKED THE
WORLD (2001)

The world is indeed full of peril, and there are many dark places;
    but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands
    love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.
