Respond with a question of your own. Ask them what their selection and
challenge policies are, when they were last updated, etc. If they have
one, then you'll have to decide if you can live within that framework.
Ask them if they are satisified with the current policies and why. At the
very least you'll know if Harry Potter would be likely to fall into their
inappropriate category. If they don't have any formal, written board
approved policy, insist that would this would be a priority to establish,
which you would do in accordance with ALA guidelines and mentor/peer
suggestions! Include the reader's bill of rights in your new document.
You can somewhat avoid answering the question directly this way. I would
also ask if they have ever had any challenges and if so, how were they
handled in the past? You might also indicate that part of your
professional training is in the selection and evaluation of resources and
bring in any applicable parts of your coursework related to those areas.
If they seem too conservative/rigid, no matter how great your desire to be
hired "anywhere" is, don't take the position because you'll be unhappy
ultimately. It's rare that this type of "conservativism" doesn't have a
greater or more insidious reach than just what type of books are on the
shelf. That's my 2 cents! Lisa
