Hi, Everyone!

Thanks so much to all of you who responded to my request for information on
the Cat in the Hat costume offered by Morris Costumes through the link on
NEA's Read Across America website. Opinions seem evenly divided between the
value of making my own costume and purchasing one; I'm leaning toward
purchasing, having found from past experience that the time and expenses
involved in making one usually comes out about even with the cost of
purchasing. Here's the responses I received:

Morris Costume is wonderful and you can get it in three days. I still have
mine from three years ago and it is in great shape. Wish I was, but the Cat
is great!!!!

Hi,
The quality of the costume was ok, not great, but what you'd expect of any
Halloween type costume. We used it for four years, and it held up - no
rips, etc. I was never the one to wear it, and I would say that it wasn't
a large costume, but any average sized person would fit into it. Our
janitor wore it one year over his clothes (but he's very very skinny).
It's worth it in any case - the kids love having the cat walk around all
day (and these were 4-6 graders).
Good luck,

I have a Cat in the Hat costume but I bought mine at a local costume shop. It
came with everything but the gloves (sold seperately) and I have been very
happy with it.

I ordered the Teachers kit that had pins, buttons, a
hat etc. The hat is a thin felt. I don't know about
the costumes. The order arrived in less than a week,
well packed and everything was there. no surprises.

I bought one several months ago online for under $40. It was a one piece
suit
with hat a bowtie. I bought red hightop basketball shoes to wear with it,
and
the white gloves were sold separately for around $5.

We made a Cat in the Hat costume a few years ago--simply wear black pants and
a black turtleneck, cut a piece of white felt, black panyhose stuffed for the
tail, a Christmas bow around your neck, and all you have to buy is the red
and white striped hat.

The costume I ordered from Morris is at least 6 years old and I have
been pleased. I did NOT purchase the one that had the true cat face. The
children love the one I have. I have 5th and 6th graders. I did order the
gloves/mitts and whiskers separately. I put a black t-shirt under the top
because the back has an opening about 10-12 inches down. I just wear black
shoes.
Hope this helps.
