Actually, there are some legitimate issues on both sides. The ALA Code of =
Ethics (which is almost as much of political stement as ait is a code) =
states:

II. We uphold the principles of intellectual freedom and resist all =
efforts to censor library resources.

A case could be made that she is not upholding the "spirit" of this =
article. However, it does present intellectual freedom within the context =
of a library. Even if we did leave off the second part, This document is =
not the same as the legal canons or medical ethics statement. It carries =
no enforcement power.

As for the poet who started the anti-war theme, I can understand his =
motivations. There are pretty pictures, and then there is art which makes =
a social/political statement. Good poetry speaks to the soul and can have =
a profound influence. But, had the poets individually decided to write =
anti-war poems and then been univited, I would see a much more greivous =
offense than the one committed here. In this case, we have a person who =
has decided to skew an event toward his personal political outlook. =
Therefore, the sponsor decided to postpone/cancel the event.

Laura might be seen as a bit of a victim here, but I don't feel sorry or =
empathize with her. She chose the political life by marrying George W. =
In this case, she's being placed in a difficult position by both sides. =
That happens in public life and she's going to have to deal with it. =
First ladies have always had more influence than they've been given credit =
for. The problem in this case is that I'm not so sure that her husband is =
really the one calling the shots. That would severely diminish her =
influence over policy areas where she should be knowledgeable. =20

I don't believe that Laura is a librarian at heart and that might be the =
root of the issue. How could she marry someone who is so anti-intellectual=
and anti-civil rights and still be passionate about the what we believe =
in? Any sort of statement (censure isn't an option) would have to be =
weighed very carefully for the political ramifications. I just wish the =
media would quit referring to background as a librarian. She isn't one =
anymore.

David,

I don't think LM NET is a place to post your negative political views. =
The
second anyone is against the way you think, you say, "They should be
censored." That isn't right. After all, even the ALA says we should all
present differing views on a subject matter. So, if someone's political
views differ from your own - you shouldn't go around and say they should =
be
"censored." That's why we call it America - we have the freedom to =
express
our opinions.
