I, too, charge a replacement cost most times. However, in a school where half of the students are on free and reduced lunch - collecting is a problem. I have offered for students, who are not able to pay, to replace the item with a similar item (paperback fiction for paperback fiction and hardback for hardback). While students may not always be able to pay, they have been able to come up with a suitable book to clear their fine, so that they may continue to check out books. In fact, one student brought in a bag of books to replace one that he lost! I think he cleaned his bookshelf! The books brought in are often donated to classroom teachers. It doesn't bring in any money, but it does help the student learn responsibility.
