I have often used a similar tactic - although I request that they bring =
in 3 "gently used" paperback books to "pay" for the lost paperback  =
item.  Generally speaking the lost item is not something I'd replace =
exactly anyway.  What I tell the kids is that they can bring in books =
from home that they are not reading any more, but that they think other =
kids might like.  I have actually gotten a few gems this way - and, as =
Laura noted, at least the kids are practising responsibility.  I make =
them bring in 3 books for the 1 lost one as a symbol of the fact that it =
is not a direct replacement of the item, but that they are "paying".
