As a solo librarian with no assistant, it is frustrating to have five or ten minutes to check out books to a whole class of children, and be asked by students where they can find certain books or subjects while I am "stuck" behind the computer. This is especially true with young children who can't read or decipher call numbers yet. If you can't always leave your desk to show students where items are located, and you have a direct line of sight from your desk to most of the books in your library, you can use a laser pointer to point out a book or shelf of books without leaving your desk! Just be sure not to shine it in anyone's eyes...
