I have just assumed that the reason for removing hatsand caps was that it made eye-contact easier. It is often difficult to see someone's eyes when they are wearing a hat or cap. And in a building, the lighting just doesn't seem to be conducive to hat-wearing AND eye-contact. It seems to me that teacher/student eye-contact is a must, and allowing students to wear their hats/caps, and thus cover their eyes, would further inhibit communication, especially in those students who want to blend in and not be noticed. Some kids wear their hats/caps down so far over their faces, I'm sure they could sleep during a whole class period and no one be the wiser. (including the wearer as they no doubt missed the information that is being taught.) As for me, me and my library will continue to ask patrons to remove their headgear. I want to see their faces and eyes, not some logo stuck on the top of their heads.
