1. Our security system by 3M is great, but we are not allowed to =
utilize the magnetic
strips on computer equipment for a variety of reasons. All of our =
laptops and the
heavy-duty carts are cataloged into our Circulation Catalog. The bar =
codes for our
Library Media Technology Center and for the county are on the back sides =
of the
laptops. When students come to the Circulation Desk, we check out the =
laptops
the same way we do for our books. When the students return the laptops =
at the
end of the class period or their lunch period, we check the laptops back =
into the
Circulation Catalog. It is so easy to see at a quick glance that all =
laptops have been
returned or if some students have them checked out. Also, this allows =
us to keep
a more accurate record of our daily activity. Additionally, we have =
printed large
signs in bright colors and have them laminated and placed in plastic =
holders.
We place the large signs on specific tables which makes it so much =
easier to
monitor anywhere in the LMTC.

2. If we cannot check the laptops out to individual students with the =
scanner as
mentioned above, then we use a check-out sheet (see attachment / may run =
on two
sides of colored paper / spacing for two separate students per laptop =
number) for
individual students or if we are checking them out to an entire class. =
For many
security reasons, I strongly recommend that a staff person at the LMTC =
sign the
names of the students to the check-out sheet. That will allow the staff =
to monitor the
laptops much better, plus it is a great way to learn the names of the =
students! Also,
we keep 16 of the laptops on a large cart behind the Circulation Desk so =
they are
ready to check out during the three lunch hours. We do have double =
battery packs
in the laptops as the students are not allowed to use disks or CD-Roms. =
Having two
battery packs is great and allows the laptops to remain charged all day =
and then to be
recharged every night. For security reasons and protection against =
virus conditions,
the laptops are checked out and utilized only at the LMTC. The students =
are not
allowed to check them out to use at home and not allowed to take them to =
other areas
of our school.

3. Needless to say, we are super-busy with 32 laptops. So, this is the =
second year
we have utilized this procedure, and it is working well for us. Hope =
this will be
helpful for you and your students, would like to know what you decide to =
do with
your laptops, and please have a Wonderful Week!!!!!

Dear LM_Netters:
If you have a security system in place, are you able to tag portable
computers in order to check them out through the security system? If,so =
,
which system are you using? Does it work pretty well, or do you see it =
as
more of a hassle than not. Any information you may have will be most
helpful to me. Thanks in advance.
