I apologize for posting to the whole list, but I've lost the original
request for books picturing absentee fathers.
We have one in our parent library that I think is very good:
Lindsay, Jeanne Warren.
     Do I have a daddy? : a story about a single-parent child with a
special section for single parents / written by Jeanne Warren Lindsay ;

     A single mother explains to her son that his daddy left soon after
he was born. Includes section with suggestions for answering the

And, for the converse, here's a decent one about a non-custodial mom:

     Olivia, who lives with just her dad since her parents got divorced,
