The website maintains lists of poorly bound books received by libraries. If you have experienced this, please read his message below. Sylvia K. Norton Library, Information, and Technology Services Maine Department of Education/Maine State Library Mailing address: Maine State Library 64 State House Station Augusta, Maine 04333 207-287-5620 1-800-322-8899 sylvia.k.norton@maine.gov -----Original Message----- From: John Clark [mailto:wyvern@powerlink.net] Greetings, My name is John Clark, and I am a former public librarian, currently working as the Library Systems Specialist for the Maine State Library. When I was a head librarian at the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, I created a website called "The Publishers' Hall of Shame" in response to Maine librarians' frustration over poorly bound books that fell apart after just a few circulations. In the 15 months since I created it, the site has grown to accept bad book submissions on a regular basis from public, academic and school libraries in 34 states, 2 Canadian Provinces and even a couple of Australian libraries. At first, my intention was simply to provide a way for fellow librarians to vent, but as the number of submissions grew, I sought out contact information so aggrieved contributors could seek replacements for poorly bound merchandise. The site has been profiled in American Libraries as well as on the web and in an article in V.9:3 of Archival News. Last week, I was approachd by the gentleman whose message appears below for a more in-depth article that will not only look at the issue from the librarian's viewpoint, but will attempt to get responses from the most frequently cited publishers as well as the companies who actually print the books. In essence, it has the potential to turn the tide in the library world's effort to seek redress for shoddy merchandise. Mr. Levin is also extremely interested to find out if the defective book issue is a problem in America's public schools. If any of you have received defective books, I would like to know. If any of you have had problems in your schools with defective textbooks, Mr Levin would like to hear from you directly. I have included his email at the end of his message. Thank you. Regards, John R. Clark M.Ed., MLIS wyvern@prexar.com *********************** We're interested in talking to you about your Web site and observations regarding defective books. If interested, please write back ASAP and we can arrange a telephone interview. Also, I would be interested in talking to some school officials around the country who have been impacted by these defective materials. Do you have any contacts in this regard?
