Mac tech help needed

I've been using my trusty G3(OS 8.6) at home, but now have a new iMac.: )

I need to transfer a large group of files to the new machine before I
can use it as my primary workstation. At school I'd just move files
to the server, but at home.. .

I'm having a tough time making the file transfer and would like some
help from those of you who have made this migration successfully.

My G3 has a zip disk; but I don't want to buy $60 converter cable for
USB, so. .

I tried file sharing with a mini hub, but the transfer is incredibly
slow (one folder gave a 72 hr message when I started to copy it)

I tried a free 60 day mac.com subscription, but I can't get to the
idisk with the G3 (the site has directions for OSX and OS 9 access. .
not anything earlier.
I get a 'user authentication method required cannot be found' problem message.

I'd appreciate any suggestions : )
