Hi. Thank you to those who replies to a request for information on Jack
Gantos. As requested, I am sharing the replies with the list. Happy New
Year.

Hello,
We heard Jack Gantos at Keene State Children's Literature Festival
this year and he was wonderful. That was addressing adults, but I think
he would be wonderful for anyone.
Best Wishes,
Sandy

We had Jack Gantos at a K-5 school two years ago. He is fantastic. I can't
remember the cost - definitely not cheap, but he is good. He connects with
the students, has a great presentation style and talks about the writing
process. The teachers thought he was excellent and all the students loved
him.

I now work at grade 5/6 school and hope to have him visit here in another
year.

Hi there,
I haven't had Jack Gantos visit but I've heard him present at another
middle school and he is incredible. I have heard that he might tour in
January of 2004 and I believe his costs are about $2000 per day. Worth
every penny, in my opinion.
Good luck!

Jack is a fabulous visiting author, very easy and wonderful with the kids.
Because he has won awards, he is quite expensive - I think it was $150 a
couple of years ago.

I can't help with prices, but I think he would be an excellent choice. I saw
him speak at a conference and I would think he would be appropriate for any
grade level, since he has written books for all. He uses an overhead
projector and draws the whole time he talks. He is absolutely hilarious, and
if you can get him he's worth whatever he asks.

Yes, I saw him at a conference. He has really dry humor and is one
funny guy. I do not know about his prices but he would be perfect for
children ages 5 to 15 I think (personal idea... This is my 33 year to
teach)...Goodluck!!!

Lawrence,
My daughter's elementary school had Jack Gantos visit several times.
He did a presentation with the upper grades and showed them how he wrote a
Rotten Ralph book. I forget what he did with the lower grades, but he was
very entertaining. My daughter had already moved on, but the school had
him return a second year as an author in residence for a week. I know at
the time he was thought to be expense, but I thought he was worth it.

i Lawrence--
We had Jack 2 years ago. I'm at home, so I don't have my numbers here, but
I think he was close to $1000. That was before one of his Joey Pigza books
was named as a Newbery Honor Book so I'll bet he's more now. I had a mixed
reaction to his presentations. He was excellent for my 3-5th grades--very
funny and entertaining. He was a little less so for the younger kids. One
little guy was a little too noisy and he had him come up front and just sit
facing the whole assembly of kids. My teachers weren't too cazy about that
method of crowd control. I think for middle school, he would probably be very
good.

I hosted him at my K-5 school of 900+ students in October. He is great! His
presentations are like mini-writing workshops. He talks to kids about their
own writing while demonstrating how he uses experiences from his own
childhood journals and memories. I highly recommend him! He has visited
several schools in my district, all loved the presentations. He is a
gracious guest, too.

Heard him speak at the Butler University Literature Conference. He was
wonderful. No idea about price, etc.

e had visits from Jack Gantos in our district last spring. He visited with
all our elementary and middle grades, from 1-8, doing some presentations
and some workshops. Then he went to the public library and spoke to school
and children's public librarians from all over the county, and addressed
children and parents at a night time presentation at the public library.
He was very well-received at all of these. I personally saw three of his
presentations and thought he was wonderful. He spoke about his personal
life and how he came to writing. He was very witty, inspiring and
thoughtful. The children responded very well to him. Highly recommend!

We had Jack Gantos visit our elementary schools in Katy ISD, Katy, TX..
He was wonderful. I'm not at school so I cannot look at the prices etc.
and how we scheduled him, but I think he was $500 for a half day plus
travel and food expenses. We shared the expenses with other schools to
make it cheaper. I think we scheduled him for a week in the fall and a
week in the spring so he could visit 20 elementary schools doing half
day performances--one for K-2 and one for 3-5. No one was disappointed.
He is very entertaining and at the same time he is teaching students
about writing what they know about. Some of his recently published books
are geared towards jr. high and high school and are not appropriate for
elementary, but I understand schools that have had him at that level
have loved him too. .
