Good morning LM_NETters! The January 2003 topic for Weed of the Month is: Religions. The religion section of most school library media centers may seem small and relatively inactive compared to the rest of the collection. Why bother to weed? Because different religions and religious beliefs are in the news lately, and students need current unbiased information in these sensitive times. Your students may turn to your collection to try to understand current conflicts and issues. Weed any old and misleading titles and offer them attractive works with a contemporary perspective. A brief explanation of Weed of the Month for new LM_NET members: The SUNLINK Weed of the Month began in September, 1997, from an idea by Mike Eisenberg co-owner of LM_NET, and as an effort to help provide Florida's School Library Media Specialists with guidelines and suggestions for weeding their collections a little at a time as well as adding quality materials. A section of the collection is identified each month during the school year (September through May) as a weeding target. For more information, including guidelines for weeding this area, suggested titles to examine, and possible titles to consider for purchase, go to http://www.sunlink.ucf.edu/weed/ .The current topic, as well as the archives of previous Weed of the Month topics for the past years may be found at the same location by scrolling down the menu bar on the left side of the screen.
