Here are the response I received about purchasing PDA's for teachers. Thanks for all of your responses. The suggested websites are great. Thanks again for taking the time to respond. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My district purchased Palms for all principals and vic principals. They did have training, but just like teachers some use them and some do not. Mine for one does not. My previous principal used hers a lot with her date book, notes, etc. I am piloting a palm for library media specialists. One was given to an elementary, middle and HS library media specialist. We were not given any inservice, but each of us was chosen for our technology expertise. I use mine for a lot. I use the date book and calendar for reminders and notes as well as the regular calendar features. I use the notepad to take notes during meetings, conferences, etc. I then upload them to my computer, clean them up and save or print them. I even take the notes for the SIT meetings using my Palm. I also have a program that goes with my gradebook program. It allows me to put do grading and attendance on the Palm. I then upload it to the computer to do my report cards. I love to be able to take attendance and record forgotten library books without having to write it down and then sit down at the computer later. This is done right on the spot and I upload everything at the end of the day. I can also grade as I walk around a observe activities and projects. I am not tied to the computer or write it on paper that I am then afraid of misplacing or that I have to set down and type into the computer later. I also have all of the names, addresses, e-mail addresses and phone numbers from my address book in the Palm so that I have access to them all of the time. I hope this helps. if you have any other questions I will gladly try to answer them, feel free to ask. ------------------------------------------------- PDE bought palm pilots for the IUs (I'm not sure if it was for the executive directors or for the IMS directors) and brought the recipients in to Harrisburg for training. (I think it was for 3 days of training!) Check with your IU people and see what they say. ------------------------------------------------- Dear Diane, Here is a link to all the best sites dealing with PDA's for schools and classrooms... http://school.discovery.com/schrockguide/gadgets.html (You will definitely want to look at the AlphaSmart Dana as a option for teachers, too. http://flydana.com) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Only the administrators have PDA's. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Diane, I'd love to know the results of your survey. CVSD is looking toward PDAs. Our Math Dept plans to require them instead of a calculator when the price falls below $100. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our school is piloting a project with Palms this year for our sixth graders. We purchased the Palm 125 for our entire staff last April (everyone in the building)and provided several workshops on their use. Then we purchased 125 handhelds for all of our sixth graders to use this year. This is a wonderful article (it's very long) but it has just about everything you want to know about using handhelds in an educational setting. http://www.seirtec.org/publications/NewsWire/Vol5.2.pdf and here's a link to a survey that was done on Palms in education http://www.palmgrants.sri.com and finally, here's a link to an incredible site created by a fifth grade teacher using handhelds in his classroom http://www.mpsomaha.org/willow/p5/handhelds/ We're very excited about using handhelds. They are catching on big time here in Michigan thanks to HI-CE out of the University of Michigan (www.hi-ce.org/palms) that has developed quite a bit of free software to use on the Palm operating system. As you can see, I have lots of info for you. Let me know if you need more! Good luck! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- was interested in your post on the state listserv. Would you share responses with me? Our school district is looking at a few case studies in our county and beginning to talk about handhelds. Our administrators have i-Pac's for school management (student record) software use, but we don't have any teachers using handhelds in the classroom. Thanks for sharing! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our district purchased Palms and gave them to volunteer teachers and administratorsm to use. They had training and will report back to the Tech Dept. on their successes and/or failures. You may want to contact our Tech administrator for more information. ------------------------------------- our district uses iPACs. They were not purchased for every teacher but for those who are integrating technology. I am new here so I don't know the criteria used. There was training provided and information shared on uses. HOpe this helps. ------------------------------------------------------------- We have purchased for department heads and admimnistrators, individual departments have purchased for their members. We recommend divices using the PALM operating system. We have not found any need to do any training. The technology head put the various forms of the school calendar on the web so they could be downloaded to the handheld calendar without overwriting anything already there. I t has saved hours of time and helped keep me on track. In the library we use them to access the catalog. A real help to be able to pull up inormation without going to a comp[uter or being able to walk around the room and answer questions.
