Several of you expressed interest in my one-page, front & back, laminated
shelving guide for volunteers. Here it is. NOTE: Many of the things are
specific to my library, of course, such as colored labels, colored dots, etc.
Because I had to cut&paste instead of Attach, the bold lettering, etc., didn't
all come out the same.

SHELVING GUIDE

E Easy Readers/Picture Books
KEL Shelve alphabetically by three lower letters on spine label

FIC Fiction/Chapter Books
CLE Shelve alphabetically by entire last name of author, not just
                three letters.
                Example:
                First Alcock, Vivian
                Then Alcott, Louisa

If same last name, shelve by last name, then first name.
                Example:
                First Christopher, John
                Then Christopher, Matt

If more than one book by same author, shelve by author
                first, then by title.
                EXAMPLE: Books by Beverly Cleary:
                First Henry and Ribsy
                Then Mouse and the Motorcycle
                Then Ramona and Her Mother
                Then Ramona Quimby, Age 8

RED LABELS Newbery Award books
                        Shelve with FICTION
unless there is a Dewey number

GREEN LABELS Caldecott Award books
                        Shelve with EASY/PICTURE
unless there is a Dewey number

ORANGE LABELS Beginning/First readers
Remove orange label; replace with orange tape
                        above label
                        Shelve with EASY

BLUE DOTS Bluebonnet Award nominees (Young Readers'State Award)
                        Shelve on table display

YELLOW DOTS Battle of the Books
Shelve behind CheckOut Desk for 5th grade only

REF REFERENCE collection
Shelve on wall under tree, by Dewey number

PRO PROFESSIONAL collection
Shelve in room behind CheckOut desk, by Dewey number

NON-FICTION Books will have numbers on the spine label.
Shelve by numbers first, then by three letters.
                        EXAMPLE: 398.2 GAL
                                  398.2 GRI
                                  398.2 MAR
                                  398.24 ALL
                                  398.24 SCH
                                  398.246 BUR
                                  398.4 ALE
                                  398.48 AAR

IF: 1.Spine label cannot be easily read
        2.Spine label is missing

THEN: Give to Librarian
