Noticing in the most recent Time magazine that the author has died, I was reminded 
of what a powerful book Autobiography of a Face is. Lucy Grealy was sticken with 
cancer as a child, and many surgeries left her quite disfigured.  This is the story 
of her hospitalizations and the growing realization that her appearance was not the 
totality of her personhood.  A gripping story of a young woman's emotional triumph 
over a tragic disease (at least temporary triumph--it didn't say what she died 
from, but she was only 39). We have used this in 9th grade and there's plenty to 
work with.
