Yesterday my older computer was on when I got home. This is a computer that
I do not use very much. We had had a power surge because all of the clocks
in the house were blinking. It was raining, but there was no thunder and
lightning during the day. I called Gateway and was told that there was a
glitch in the hardware that caused this and to unplug it when I wasn't using
it. She said that there was no setting (Windows 98) in the operating system
that would stop this.

I used to unplug this computer during electrical storms but I had a problem
with static electricity getting to the memory and motherboard so haven't
done this in several years. I have a better-than-average surge protector on
the computer and the protection light is still on. Is there anything wrong
with the computer or surge protector? I hate to invest in a UPS system like
I have on my newer computer since I use this one only as a backup.
