Hello,

I posted an email requesting help with leveling books a la Fountas and
Pinnell that are not listed in their books on book leveling.

It seems that many people are trying to do this same thing and not having
much luck. My school has decided for now to level the books that we can and
not do the others. My principal seems to think we can sit down as a team and
do this later. I am not so sure. We were only trying to level our sets of
classroom novels,we call them our trade book sets. I was not going to level
our entire collection.

Here are the responses that had somehelpful hints. As I said earlier most
of the responses were people who also need assistance.

Good luck all.

This site has a good explanation of lexiles http://www.lexile.com/faq.asp .
It is from NC and is the FAQ page - very informative.

I use Fountas & Pinnell also when I'm helping kids find Just Right
books. At one point my principal passed on a web site that allowed
you to enter titles to find some books that you couldn't find in F&P.
Unfortunately, I don't have it here at home, but when I did a google
search using "leveling books" I got several possibilities. You might
give it a try.

We are also in that process. Currently we are reviewing each book and
assigning a level. We are using Fountas and Pinnell's Matching Books to
Readers and Leveled Books for Readers 3-6 and Pinnell's Scholastic
Guided Reading Program Teacher's Guide. This is incredibly time
consuming. I would love to get some help on this giant project. Please
post a hit on your responses or email me privately.

I often use the Reading Counts portion of Scholastic's website.
You can often get the level there. The URL is long, but I've posted it
below.

My school also uses the Fountas leveling system. Actually she was an
English specialist in my school system so that is logical. My
school is developing a book room with many leveled books, including
lots of sets. Basically what they appear to be doing (and I don't do
it; I have enough on my plate) is compare books to those that are in
Fountas and decide on vocabulary, sentence length, and other
criteria. In fact they occasionally have changed some Fountas levels
since they felt they just didn't appear to be correct. This is
certainly not an exact science. Your teachers might pick several
books at each level to use as a model and rate the new books
according to them.
