JOAN LOWERY NIXON, age 76, died Saturday, June 28, 2003 in Houston. Mrs.
Nixon had a Journalism degree from the University of Southern California and
was an author specializing in young adults mysteries. She was awarded The
Mystery Writers of America Edgar Allen Poe Award for 4 of her mysteries, the
only person to win 4 Edgar awards, and was an author of over 140 books. She
was a member of Kappa Delta, past president of Houston Alumni Association,
past president Mystery Writers of America and long time member of St. Cyril
of Alexandria Catholic Church. She developed "Kids Love a Mystery Week",
initiated writing badge for the Girls Scouts of America, was an active
member of Western Writers of America and earned 2 "Golden Spur" awards for
the Orphain Train Series. One book, The Other side of Dark, was made into a
movie. She had received many international, national, and state awards for
her writing. Her books, were published in 20 languages. Mrs. Nixon is
survived by her husband Hershell Nixon; daughters Kathleen Brush and her
husband, Kirk of Colorado, Maureen Quinlan and her husband, Brian of
Minnesota and Eileen McGowan of Houston; son State Representative Joe Nixon
and his wife, Allyson of Houston; grandchildren Melia, Nichole and Veronica
Brush, Brian, Michael, Sean, Andy, Bridget and Tim Quinlan, Nicholas,
Stewart and Matt Nixon and Katherine Joan McGowan; sisters Pat Collins and
Marilyn Lowery. Friends are invited to visitation with the family from 6:30
pm until 7:30 pm with a rosary at 7:30 pm at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010
Bering Drive. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on
Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at St. Cyril of Alexandria Catholic Church, 10503
Westheimer Road with Rev. Mario J. Arroyo, Rev. Ralph Roberts and Rev. Issac
O. Francis as Con-Celebrants. Rite of Committal will follow at Memorial Oaks
Cemetery. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the My
Baby Project, Mental Health Association of Houston and Harris County, 2211
Norfolk, suite 810, Houston, Texas 77098.
