TECH:PARELLEL CABLE TRANSFER

I am trying to connect my laptop (XP) to my desktop (2000) to get some
pictures off the laptop. I have the parellel cable I need, I thought I set
up each computer, and they each show that they are connected (OEM Computer
connected direct parallel - shows connected at 4.0Mbps -  even shows bytes
sent and received. However, no where on either computer can I see what's on
the other! Don't I have to see that to transfer? Anyone out there tell me
what I'm doing wrong? Or can sent me the directions? There are way too many
pics to put on disks and move physically! Thanks in advance!!
