C-SPACER  - This is a graphic organizer used at my school to help young
students identify/tell the parts of a story.  We continue to use C-SPACER as a
writing graphic organizer to help students plan writing their own original stories.

C      Characters
S      Setting

P      Plot or Problem
         C, S, and P are normally found in the Beginning of a story.

A     Action   (I teach students to "tell" the 4 most important actions, in
sequential order,
                           which occur in the Middle of the story).

C      Conclusion  (how the story ends; how the problem is solved or
resolved); this is the
                                  End of the story.
                  *3  Main parts of a story:    BEGINNING          MIDDLE
      END

*E      Elaboration   (When analyzing a story, ask, "Did the author use
descriptive and
                                   lively words, interesting details in
telling the story?"   OR, when a
                                   student is preparing to write his/her own
story, talk about making good
                                   word choices and including descriptive and
interesting details).
*R      Reread / Rewrite   (Depending on whether the student is using
C-SPACER  to analyze
                                              or tell the parts of a story;
or whether the student is writing an
                                              original story.  *Reread to
check for forgotten information or
                                              details from the story.
*Rewrite or edit one's own work.

I like C-SPACER because it can be used (with modifications) as early as 1st.
grade. It continues to be utilized for analyzing more complex stories and for
original writing as students advance each year. If it is used consistently
with literature study and writing, it provides a foundation upon which students
can build as their skills and knowledge grow.
