Subject: Re: Scavenger Hunts for Incoming 6th Graders

I used to have ms students and the 6th grade scavenger hunt we did was
always a hit. I gave fun size candy bars as prizes to everyone when the
hunt was over and the team that finished first also got coupons for a free
ice cream at the cafeteria.

MATERIALS:

Unmarked maps of the library that includes all book cases, file cabinets
etc. One map for each student.

10 Laminated cards with a Dewey Area on one side.(I use the pictures from
Caveman Dewey. You should be able to find them by typing caveman dewey into
google) On the other side of the card is a list of areas for the students to
locate: circulation desk, paperback books, biographies, fiction,
non-fiction, pencil sharpener, current magazines, back-issue of magazines
etc. etc. At the end of the list are 2 questions. One involves using the
OPAC, the second one involves a library rule.

A handout that list the library rules/procedures. I have a laminated
classroom set of these rules/procedures that I use from year to year and
save paper.

Answer keys for the judges.

ACTIVITIES:

Students are divided into teams of 4.

Teachers & library assistants are designated as judges

Each student gets a map. Each team gets a dewey card.

Each student must mark on the map all the items that are on back of the
dewey card. They must also answer the 2 questions that are at the end of
the list. One question requires them to use OPAC, while the other question
requires them to read the rules/procedures handout.

Students must also look at the dewey area that is marked on the front of the
card and mark that exact section on the library map.

The team then compares answers and pick one map to be the team's "final
answer".

They go to a judge to have their answers corrected. If the judge deems an
answer to be wrong - the team must go back and find out the right answer.

The first team to finish all answers correctly is the first prize winner.

Each team continues to work until all completed.

The Librarian is in charge of keeping the groups moving and supervising
while the judges are judging.

No adult is allowed to help.

When all teams are done - librarian gathers them together and has each team
share the rules or procedures that they learned. If there are any rules
questions that were not covered the librarian goes over them then.

First prize ice cream coupons and fun size candy bars are awarded to the
winning team. After that, each team comes up to pick up their candy bars.

This hunt has been wildly popular over the years. I meet with the 6h grade
team at the beginning of the year and they choose which classes the students
will be coming out of, depending on the schedule that year. There is always
competition about who gets to do it. Sometimes it has been English classes -
sometimes Science, Social Studies or even Math. Everyone has a terrific
time!

Hope this was what you were looking for.
