I have been using AR and STAR for four years, now. I absolutely love it.
But then again, we don't abuse it. We use it as an "added" benefit to reading.
I issue certificates at the end of the first semester and again at the end of
the year. Teachers can use it or not (though I encourage its use). The
students love it. I've had kids burst in the library asking "Can I take a test?".
Visitors are often amazed. Our reading PSSA scores have improved somewhat,
but I think it will take a few years for it to show up there.

Don't let the company "bully" you into using it only their way. They would
want you to use it as your main reading program. I disagree. It works well as
a "learning station" in each classroom. Teachers have used the STAR
diagonostic testing to support what they have discovered via other testing.

The data you get is amazing and easy to compile.

Good luck.
