LM_NET Archive

As the chair of the current IASL Virtual Conference, I find it uncanny that
you sent this message to LM_NET at this time because the very focus of our
discussions is the short-term future of school-based librarians if we do not
begin to demonstrate the difference that we make to the education of our
students in our own schools. Rather than just sending principals and
administrators an annual report of statistics of library-usage or the URL of
research reports, we need to be involved in evidence-based practice.

Whether you are a member of IASL or not, I urge you to read Dr Ross Todd's
keynote paper available at
http://www.iasl-slo.org/conference2003-virtualpap.html

Ross offers some suggestions about the what and the how (I think we are
convinced of the why) in his paper, but there is also an excellent report
called Impact of School Libraries on Student Achievement: a Review of the
Research' (March, 2003) commissioned by the Australian School Library
Association with Australian Council on Educational
Research available on the ASLA website at
http://www.asla.org.au/research/index.htm

If we look at what the research is showing already about the impact of a
top-shelf program, then that will help us know what sort of evidence we need
to collect from our own situations to demonstrate that we are making a
difference. Steven Covey (The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) calls it
"starting with the end in mind." "To begin with the end in mind means to
start [your journey] with a clear understanding of the destination. It means
to know where you are going so you are better able to understand where you
are now and so that the steps you take are always in the right direction."

In a previous surprise move last week, the superintendent of Kansas City,
Missouri schools proposed eliminating 1/3 of the school library positions
within the district.

The Kansas City library media specialists have taken their case to the
public and are getting some support from a district committee:
