How about:

--- creating a WebQuest / Pathfinder of "A Christmas Carol" for others to
use in the future. This could include websites, books, videos, and other
materials that can be located within the library or on the Internet / online
databases.

--- research and / or design clothing from that time period (use of art
students' talents--and collaboration with art department---could be
employed). Hand-drawn sketches, digital camera
shots with PowerPoint, or video production could be used.

---create a video production of a segment of the play (use of drama
students' talents, as well as incorporation of the multimedia department)--
could include original music creations.

--- foods and culinary delights of the time period...exactly what was on Bob
Cratchet's table BEFORE and AFTER Scrooge arrived to "make merry?"

--- PowerPoint presentation of the scenario of "What IF Scrooge chose love
over money earlier in his life?"--- allowing students to re-write the story
showing a benevolent businessman with money to share.

--- Compare the conditions of impoverished children / social conditions
during Dickens's time and those of today's society. (See website:
http://www.perryweb.com/Dickens/work_carol.shtml for starters).

--- creation of a small "Dickens's Village" with research presented on the
types of construction that were available, the businesses that would have
been in the village, and the conditions of the city during the time of
Scrooge.

--- research into the variations of "A Christmas Carol" through stage and
screenplays, and the impact that these productions have made throughout the
twentieth century. (See
http://www.cedmagic.com/featured/christmas-carol/christmas-carol.html for a
starting place.)

--- Other great online resources to check:
  Talking to Dickens
http://www.talkingto.co.uk/ttcd/html/ttcd_answ_scat.asp?CatID=179&AuthorID=5

   Vocabulary of Dickens
http://65.107.211.206/authors/dickens/pva/pva116.html

All of these ideas can be researched through the Internet (but many have
resources listed to print materials found in libraries). In addition, the
use of any online databases can help to expand or refine the ideas for
research topics. (Contemporary Literary Criticisms, Twayne or Scribner's
online)

(Just some ideas for one of my favorite stories-- and stage production--I
have to see it every holiday season! )

Good luck!
