A cohort of students in our summer TESOL academy are writing a proposal for their class that buying heritage language materials for the school library will result in ESL students' learning English more quickly, that materials in both English and the heritage language should be available to the student. So far so good. They wonder if I can track down lists of suggested books or international award winners in the top ten languages spoken in Illinois homes other than English (so we are looking for books published, typically, abroad): Spanish Polish Korean Russian Vietnamese Urdu Serbian Cantonese Chinese Gujarati Spanish I have handled, but as I don't speak Gujarati, I don't know if I would know a list of good books for K-12 in Gujarati if I was staring right at it. It seems that the Booklist columns I remember are always lists of adult materials in heritage languages, of course. As well, we could identify titles, but then actually putting the proposal into motion would be a very interesting, if not impossible, task for any school library. Any thoughts, lists, resources, etc?
