Thank you for sharing. I set up "stations" in the library most years. Some included story-related "crafts" type activities. I've also had puppet stations, materials for making puppets too. I've had dress-up stations where students acted out stories. I had a hermit crab station next to an easy chair. Children read stories to Herme, the Hermit Crab. They took that task dead seriously. Of course, they also thought he was the most brilliant hermit crab in the word. I put a "finger board" in his tank one day and told the kids he could stateboard. "Huh uh!" they all said. A few days later we had him and the finger board out of the tank. Someone dropped him and he landed on the fingerboard and "skated" across the room. The kids never doubted me again. Anyway, I also had listening stations (books on tape) and "make a book" stations with story starters. I also had shelvers among my older students. Children adopted a shelf for which they were responsible. They would read the shelves and help keep them in order. Sometimes I branched out to other subject areas to complement what might be going on in the classrooms. Behavior, however, is an issue you can address and control. Library behavior has to be taught and reinforced... and taught and reinforced again. It can be ugly at the beginning of the year, I know! But children that age are, indeed, capable of learning how to behave properly. At the same time, you're on the right track. It's wise to have something constructive for them to do if, for whatever reason, they are not actively engaged in the check-out process.
