Hi Folks-- First off, I'm so cheered to hear good library news at last. After a year of hearing the deadly words "cuts," "laid off," "unnecessary library positions," etc., along come the feisty librarians from good old Kansas City and they don't take bad news lying down--they put up their dukes! One reason library jobs get cut in the first place is the administration figures librarians won't fight back--they'll go away quietly. Hah! Kansas City debunks THAT theory. Now that we all feel better, here's what I need from you know-it-alls. I once read the most marvelous quote and I can't find it anywhere. Perhaps it's from a professional book about children's literature--not Charlotte Huck, I don't think. I've been searching for it on and off for ages, and then I remembered that old maxim--15,000 heads are better than one!--so I'm asking you if this rings any bells and you can provide the exact quote and citation. Here's my very loose paraphrase, though, of course, the original is far pithier: "The difference between a good book and a great book is this. When you read a good book, you say to yourself, 'I know JUST how that character felt. I've felt that way before.' When you read a great book, you say, 'I've never felt like this before and I don't think I'll ever think or feel the same way ever again.' " Thanks in advance for your stellar memories and brain power.
