Two years ago when my husband and I were debating the good points of making a move to Texas, we discussed the fact that we would be living near Texas Women's University and the University of North Texas (in Denton) both of which offer a PhD in Library Information Studies. My husband has recently brought up the topic (again) of my entering one of these universities and beginning this "wonderful adventure", but I am hesitant. Although I understand the work load and I have investigated the universities some, I still don't find that there is a great "calling" for those PhDs in the real world (outside of university instruction, library administration, etc.) Perhaps I'm missing the whole picture (or I'm ignoring it). I have worked (and taught) at the university level before and, although it was enjoyable, I still felt that it lacked something for me. It was because of this that I don't think I'd be entirely happy working at the university level again if I did receive a PhD. (Perhaps I should pursue an entirely different avenue rather than library science?) Would those who have pursued this adventure let me know the pros and cons of the LIS PhD program (not necessarily in Texas)--just the PhD program? Also, if there are specifically those who are thinking about, are in the process, or have pursued the PhD from TWU or UNT, would you give me some ideas about areas of study? I just don't feel I have a "niche" that I am eager to pursue through a PhD. Am I in denial or am I lazy? *g* Thanks! ~Shonda Brisco Trinity Valley MS / US Librarian Fort Worth, TX sbrisco021@charter.net =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
