If you are moving from a fixed elementary schedule to an open access
secondary library, it would be especially helpful to do some reading about
collaboration and perhaps make some faculty connections over the summer,
doing some advanced planning, if possible. If you're looking for a
practical book that addresses the why-to's, the how-to's, and includes
meaty collaborative lessons from stellar teacher/library media specialist
teams across the country, I do recommend my 2002 Linworth book,
COLLABORATING TO MEET STANDARDS: TEACHER/LIBRARIAN PARTNERSHIPS 7-12. And
if you haven't read it, now might be a fabulous time to read BUILDING
INFLUENCE FOR THE SCHOOL LIBRARIAN by Gary Hartzell (Linworth, 1994). It's
a fascinating look at how LMS's can leverage power in our schools by a
professor and former high school principal. I'd recommend this read to
everyone, but especially those entering a new building.

Best,
Toni
