Payne,
We also have a very successful birthday book program, and I thought
some of our info might be interesting to all. We send out letters to
every child a month before their birthday. The letter specifies three ways
in which a child can participate. They can bring in a new or like new book
of their choosing (only a few will do this) which is subject to library
approval (we have never had one that was a problem): they can send in a
check, and specify a type, subject, or even a title of a book they would
like, (this is the most popular option) which we will then purchase, (we
don't specify an amount, but ask them to please consider that the average
book cost is approx $16-$18, and most checks are from $15 to $20); or they
can come into the library and select a book from a display of "Birthday Book
Hopefuls" that we keep for the occasion. This is the second most popular
option. We usually get between 100 and 150 birthday books a year in this
fashion, which greatly helps our library. Also, when the books come in,
they are delivered to the classrooms by a Birthday Book Lady, who wears a
birthday hat, and presents the book in a little ceremony, along with a
birthday pencil and bookmark. We find that presenting the books in front of
the class reminds other students of the program, and gently encourages them
to participate as well. Names of Birthday Book Club members are also listed
in the school newspaper. Hope these ideas are helpful.
