My understanding is that you cannot claim copyright for an idea - so if someone has created an illustration to go with text this is okay. It's just a different interpretation. Rather like using keywords from a piece to frame it in your own words. It only becomes plagiarised if more than a certain amount is copied verbatim, without permission and without attribution. I often get my kids to listen to a descriptive piece from a text (such as The BFG) and get them to draw what they have heard. Then we can discuss why there are so many variations on the theme.
